Every Time/Go With Rule

I know you have heard about it being hard to Potty Train A Dachshund. However, in reality, it is no harder than any other breed. Yes, I know they can sway a little towards the stubborn side and sometimes are a touch nervous but that is no excuse not to try and indeed succeed. All it takes is a little perseverance and repeating the same thing ever day.

There is a simple rule to follow. I call it the “every time/go with” rule.

Every time your Dachshund wakes up – go with him outside

Every time your Dachshund stops playing with his toys – go with him outside

Every time your Dachshund finishes eating his food – go with him outside

Every time your Dachshund is in or out of his crate – go with him outside

Every time you get home – go with him outside

Every time you (before) go out – go with him outside

Every time you want him to go to bed – go with him outside

Recap: Every time your Dachshund stops doing whatever he was doing, it is time to take him outside.

Guess what the other rule is – “Go with him” – do not just open the door and let him out to sniff the grass with the hopes that he may remember what he should be doing out there.

You need to be there to remind your Dachshund – decide on a command that you and the rest of your household will use “every time” you want him to go potty. I like simple so use “go potty”. I say my dogs name followed by “go potty”. Now the first time your Dachshund pees or poops outside then praise him like crazy with a few “good boy, you went potty” said in a happy voice (you know the kind used with kids and puppies).

So recap – every time you take him outside use your chosen command and then praise him with the happy “good boy, you went potty”

Dachshunds are not stupid and he will soon get the idea that when he hears the word “potty” he gets positive attention from you if he pees or poops. However, he needs to have this repeated to him many times to make sure he does not forget and just sniffs the grass.

Do not scald or hit your Dachshund if he has an accident in the house.

Do not rub his nose in it – he may start to think of it as food and that is a bad habit to break.

Dachshunds love attention – they crave it. Make sure the attention you give your Dachshund is positive, as that will go a long way towards a happy and healthy dog.
